This quote by John Wooden means that it matters more who you are as a person more that who you are as a player. It matters more if you are a good person rather than if you are a good player. If you are an average player but a really good person then people will love you. On the other hand if you are a good player but a really bad person then most people will not like you because of how you are. If you are an average player but you donate money to charity then people will like you.
